6:15

This week I have been trying to get up before Ben leaves for work, with moderate success. It’s not quite light at this hour, which is inherently wrong, I say, in terms of waking up. And of course, waking up at such an hour means I am inclined to go to bed at nine, which is embarrassing. Last night at 8:30 Ben said, “Want to watch a movie?” which I suspected was dubious and although it was a promising documentary on the life of Henry Darger, indeed, by nine we were both ready to pack it in. (More about Darger, I’m sure, after I actually watch the film.)

But it’s nice and quiet at this hour, and it’s an extra hour of work, theoretically, since I tend to be more productive in the mornings. I’m still behind on this week’s Times, though – no doubt because I discovered Gawker, one more way to spend time online.

I have a love/hate relationship with getting up early. I'm generally up at 6:30, but I also like to stay awake until midnight. The math doesn't always work. (The key: automatic coffee maker, set to brew the pot 5-10 minutes before you wake up, so that when your alarm goes off you smell the coffee which makes you happy.)

I think mornings are underrated. The quiet of the morning is one of life's true pleasures. The quiet of an early Sunday morning is unequalled. Try it sometime. Get up at 7 on a Sunday to read the Times. You'll be cranky for the first 5 minutes...but soon thereafter, you'll be astonished at the pleasure of that part of the week. Better yet...take a walk at that time of the day on a Sunday. You won't regret it.

I've been meaning to try the coffee maker thing since we got the damn thing... but I am so down with the early Sunday morning thing, when it happens. That seems to be the one and only time of day I find lovely in New York anymore. Only a few people on the street helps me see what's good about that place.
