Dakota Fanning is an Alien
And I mean this in the best possible way. If she had been my student back in the day when I had students like that, I would have eaten her up with a spoon, I am sure. But there's something about this kid that is positively freaky. On screen she's eerily talented and real, often with this sort of layer of dark colors, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if she eventually did a total Jodie Foster. But what baffles me when I see her on talk shows is that she totally seems to know what's going on and is extremely articulate for an eleven-year-old while at the same time being appropriately giggly and cheerful. So is she just like, some weird kind of acting genius, totally able to compartmentalize her work from her real life, or is there a Dakota Fanning E! Hollywood True Story in her future as well? Is she such a great actress that we only think she's giggly and cheerful when really she has a secret life as an axe-murderer? I honestly can't tell. And usually - I'm pretty good at telling. If I may.

she really freaks me out in that way that the kid who saw dead people freaked me out. preternatural emotional intelligence. just proves that kids understand a lot more than we realize.
dakota fanning worked with michelle pfeiffer early on and for years she was eerily michelle pfeiffer-ish and speech and manner. make of that what you will...
oops. that should be "in speech and manner." and this has been hutchie. over and out.
Something about her freaks me out even more than the kid who saw dead people freaked me out. Maybe she's just a little sponge and picked up Michelle's isms. I was like that. Let's just hope she doesn't pick up Tom's isms.
I'm coming to believe that the spotlight at any age dims people's reality; see "Dear Tom" and "SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UUUUUUP!!!" I definitely think community theater for a kid is a better way to go, absolutely. But what I always wonder - we do need kids in movies - well, we do have some pretty far out technology these days, maybe they could have virtual kids.
there have been more than a few times when i've pleaded with my director to cast puppets as the little cratchit children, rather than work with human children. tiny animatronic tim.
Wow, no kidding!
would it be great if Adora Svitak writes a movie script to have Dacota act out? Adora Svitak published her first book at age seven, it has been transalted into Chinese, soon to be in korean and other languages, wrote more than 355,000 words of stories and poems, check out her site www.adorasvitak.com for an amazing ride.
