This blog post certainly scratched that itch.
I love the point you make about how it’s easier to just be a nice, authentic guy who acknowledges his feelings and desires rather than some repressed macho type who views every interaction as a performative struggle for dominance.
I wouldn’t want to see Lloyd Dobler with Diane Court in the long-term, because she lacks the same passion for him that he has for her and that I would have for him.
Long live Lloyd!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10624981.post-8803137590341439392011-08-10T16:06:48.792-04:002011-08-10T16:06:48.792-04:00Well, thanks!Well, thanks!Elizabeth Cranenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10624981.post-59694126730544201092011-08-09T22:05:44.616-04:002011-08-09T22:05:44.616-04:00I came by here to steal your Lloyd picture and stu...I came by here to steal your Lloyd picture and stuck around to read. But you're right, he can still be out there, and its easy to choose to be a Lloyd Dobler. My relationship just ended. I'm not sure why, but I just had to watch Dobler again. I relate to that character in a lot of ways; the movie could've been about my relationship. The difference being, we're likely not getting back together. But it's good to know that there are women out there who do get the Dobler types. If I can be so bold to include myself as that type, I can say that we are trying to be men. Good men. We know what we don't want (even if we don't always know what we do want). We know that we really enjoy loving our women. And that is a worthy goal in life.

Thanks for this post!Matthewnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10624981.post-20046192194470145292008-06-18T17:39:00.000-04:002008-06-18T17:39:00.000-04:00i argue this however: diane court did not deserve ...i argue this however: diane court did not deserve to have a lloyd dobler in her life. he was waaay too good for her. any daughter who would willingly and quickly (!) walk away from her father after all he did for her and for how long he stayed by her...not cool! Men and fathers make mistakes too and I think it was telling that Crowe decided to make Diane's father's crime to be more on the benign side. It'd be harder to forgive your dad if you found out he was say, a serial killer OR child molestor? Food for some thought.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10624981.post-86324782158094430712008-06-08T17:23:00.000-04:002008-06-08T17:23:00.000-04:00Very very glad you shared this. Not only because I had a small silly photo of Lloyd Dobler taped onto a trapper keeper-type thing once upon a time, but because it is so lovely and true and was a joy to read. And, I think it must be forwarded to the Lloyd Dobler I know, too, who sometimes doesn't realize his own Lloyd Doblerness.Amy Guthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07953635936865835997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10624981.post-53807615634093897642008-06-06T12:43:00.000-04:002008-06-06T12:43:00.000-04:00Great article! You have inspired my girlfriends and I to find our Lloyds. I love that movie, too. Did you know there's a gallery in Wicker Park named after him? The actual version of Lloyd is usually quite dull at first b/c you don't have insight into his kickboxing and charm until you get to know him. I find that most women want a Lloyd but they don't want to date guys that appear boring - but if you could imagine Lloyd in an office environment, he'd probably keep to himself and be quite shy.

Women, if that's what you want, then go tap those guys on the shoulder and invite them to lunch instead of reading articles like this and waiting for someone to look at your picture in the yearbook and calling you upLouiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10981723614670046785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10624981.post-34149778687710581182008-05-30T00:52:00.000-04:002008-05-30T00:52:00.000-04:00"Lloyd, Lloyd, all null-and-void." was my hero. He was also a good role model for a guy going into college, I believe. I also believe that Say Anything should be shown in high school sex ed classes for both boys and girls and your piece should be read along with it.
